This O2 mast (site 8025) is located on an electricity pylon in the middle of a field. Wonder if the sheep are all carrying mobiles? Another shot of the pylon mast. This Orange mast (site no. THis T-Mobile mast (site no.99974) is located on the side of the old Quarry Mill on Whitworth Road. The mast may be low down, but the location offers a good take-off towards the south. Quite a small mast, the building is just a single storey. You can see the Transmitter housing just outside the building. THis mast carries both the GSM and UMTS system for T-Mobile. This old factory in the Greenbank area of Rochdale carries the T-Mobile site no.52063, O2 site 34681, and Vodafone site no. 23225. another shot of the aerials on one end of the building. This was as close as I could get to this mast without entering private property. This mast is located on the site of the old Turners Asbestos factory (site no. 18218) and belongs to O2. Very difficult to get close to this one due to the building and demolition work. NOte the two pigeons warming their toes on the top of this one, wonder if we'll be seeing 3 headed pigeons in the next few years? :-) Another shot of site 18218, this time from a slightly better angle. Believe it or not, this mast, which carries the Vodafone site no. 23226, and Orange site no. GMN0220, is actually one of the floodlight supports at the Rochdale AFC/Rochdale Hornets Spotland Stadium.

This T-Mobile mast is also located on the side of an old factory. This UMTS mast belongs to T-Mobile. THis most be one of the most accesible of all sites, right by the main road, with no fences or anything. The site number of this T-Mobile transmitter site on Market Street, is 52058. Another shot of the T-Mobile mast, this is only a couple of years old. You can see all of the notices regarding the site on the wall behind the transmitters and power supply units. This antenna belongs to O2 the site number is 4398. Another shot of the O2 GSM aerial on the side of the old Facit Mill.

It is run by Arqiva, and the radiated power is listed as just 12 watts. This mast also hosts a couple of mobile phone aerials, and according to: http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/ they belong to 3 (Site no. OL0075 - UMTS), and Orange (Site no. GMN0065 - GSM & UMTS). Also on the mast are two white vertical antennas, which from all the 'close-call' hits I was getting appear to belong to a local Taxi MDT system. This site is located inside the grounds of a school, so if you're planning a visit I would strongly recommend a weekend, or during the school holidays, as it might look suspicious if you are seen hanging around a school with your camera whilst the children are present. This is not the easiest site to get to, though as it is located right in the corner of the playing fields, you can get around the back thanks to a number of pathways that run straight past the site. These can be a bit difficult to find, but they do run between some of the houses and you should see them if you keep a good lookout. I was very fortunate in having a friend who lived nearby, and who was able to show me the way to the site (thanks Pedders!). It is run by Arqiva, and the site number is 10303. Power radiated is listed as 10 Kilowatts. This mast also hosts a number of mobile phone aerials, and according to: http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/ they belong to Vodafone (site no. 4099 - GSM & UMTS), T-Mobile (site no. 96110 GSM), 3 (Site no. BB0038 - UMTS), O2 (Site no. 1098 - GSM), and Orange (Site no. LAN0116 - GSM & UMTS). Also attached to this mast is a wire aerial for Asian Sound Radio on 963 kHz Medium Wave, plus what looks like several Band 3 beams, a curious looking Log Periodic, and a number of the BBC's VHF FM relays for BBCs One, Two, Three and Four. This was another nice location, with a great view over the town below, and also very close to the controversial 'panoptican' sculpture known as 'The Halo' (or the UFO to some locals). This location is easily accessible by car, and makes a nice day out for the rest of the family as well. BB0036 - UMTS). Yet another sunny February day, far too sunny at times, as it made taking pictures from certain directions very difficult. This was a lovely location though, and the mast is located halfway up a field in the middle of farmland. Well worth a visit. You can see the mast from the bottom of the valley no visible site number on this one, someone needs a waterproof marker pen I think! This is the access road from the main road - the Sun was in the wrong direction

]]> Sat Jan 26 2008 The Bacup TV Transmitter Site http://aerialphots.fotopic.net/c1450453.html Just a few miles to the north of Whitworth is the town of Bacup, and this also has a TV Relay transmitter situated at the top of one of its hills. On a very murky and damp January afternoon I had a trip up to this site to take a few pictures. The Bacup site is located at National Grid Reference: SD878224 and like the Whitworth relay, also radiates about 250 watts and transmits just the four main analogue channels (at least until it's converted to digital in 2009 anyway) vertically polarised in UHF Group B. This site takes its signals from the main north west transmitter at Winter Hill and then re-broadcasts them to the Bacup area, much of which is situated in a deep valley. The antenna also provides the feed for the nearby Whitworth transmitter as well. The mast is also festooned with a large number of other aerials as well, and according to the Sitefinder website at: http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk this is used by: Orange, O2, Vodafone and also for the TETRA system used by the emergency services. The main entrance, which is located down a short drive from the main gate, carries a warning sign advising visitors not to enter the premises, so no shot of the front gate here, but a little further on there a public footpath which runs right along the back of the compound, and that was were I took most of my shots from. Again it should be noted that under no circumstances should visitors enter the compound without permission, and a perfectly adequate view of this site can be obtained from easily accessible public areas. so there should be no need to anyway. This is another site that I plan to re-visit after the digital changeover in 2009 just to see if anything looks different. The mast now also supports a number of mobile phone antennas, which according to www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk include: Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone. The National Grid Reference for this site is: SD886203 and the TV transmitter has a rated power level of 250 watts, and broadcasts vertically polarised signals in UHF Group A. This TV transmitter takes its feed from the nearby Bacup site, which takes its feed direct from the main transmitter at Winter Hill. You can see the Bacup site in a separate collection in this gallery. My last visit to this site was just after it was built in 1974, so hopefully I won't leave it quite so long before visiting again. The TV transmitters are in the white section at the top, the mobile phone aerials are mounted beneath this. I think the brick building is the original TV transmitter building one of the mobile phone transmitter buildings - note the rallying Landrover right outside the compound! This looks like part of the earth system, why it was uncovered I'm not sure!

I was unable to get close to it because of the trees and hedgerow, but it looks like a UMTS (3G) type antenna. ]]> Sat Jan 12 2008 Hunger Hill TETRA Mast http://aerialphots.fotopic.net/c1446940.html This visit to the Hunger Hill site should have been made in bright sunshine according to the BBC weather forecast (what a fool I was for even thinking they might have got it right that day), but it actually turned out to be covered in very low cloud, and was grey, wet and miserable. Having trekked all that way I wasn't planning to leave without taking a few shots, and thankfully the wind did start to get up a bit, and some of the cloud lifted allowing me to get some shots of the full mast. Many of the images are a little darker than I would have liked, so I plan to re-visit the site in better weather and take a few more. This site is used exclusively to broadcast the TETRA signals, and from the site, which is up in the hills to the north of Greater Manchester, the take off is very impressive, as you can see on a few of the pictures, taken when the cloud was starting to lift. This site was previously used for PMR services and the original mast came down in the early 80s and was later replaced. Only the TETRA phased vertical UHF antennas, and what looks like a microwave dish are now to be seen on this mast. The site number, according to: http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/ is LNC 046, and the operator is O2, this is also what is shown on the plate on the compound entrance. NOTE: early February was unusually nice, so I paid the site another visit and have added a few more shots, this time with a little blue sky and sunshine in evidence. up in the clouds TETRA antennas giving 360 degree coverage 'scuse me whilst I touch the sky! breather pipe from the underground bunker microwave dish more rain over Greater Manchester - how unusual! My hand-held transmitter looks puny next to this one as it sits atop the local Trig Point you can see why they chose this spot - that's the 554ft Beetham Tower in the centre of Manchester over there! A good take off that's for sure, the tall buildings in the distance are in the centre of Manchester!
